Mountains and mind — one piece, once a week

The Moment Before Action

In the mountains, the fall rarely begins with the foot that slips. It begins earlier — in the moment where tiredness or hunger or bravado quietly overrides judgment. Learning to see that moment is the same skill, in different terrain, as learning to pause before saying the thing you cannot unsay.

What a Rope Team Teaches About Trust

You cannot be half-committed to someone you are roped to on a ridge. Trust in the mountains is not philosophical — it is weight-bearing. When it breaks, people fall. Most teams never discuss it until something goes wrong. The good ones find a way to build it before they need it.

Attention as a Muscle

William James said it plainly: the ability to bring a wandering attention back — over and over again — is the very root of judgment and will. He said this in 1890. We are still catching up. The good news is that it is trainable, and the training does not require silence or a cushion or any particular belief.
